I have increasingly become a fan of an iPhone application called Instagram. It has been such a cool creative outlet for me on a regular basis. I am very appreciative of the makers of this app and we will, no doubt, continue to see big things happening with their product. To have the ability to share the world, as we see it, in a convenient and user friendly way is the key to Instagram’s success. It is simple and beautiful. Granted, there are plenty of users who see fit to use it as another way to show off their biceps or reveal Fluffy the cat’s new trick, but I think many users are beginning to realize that this app can be different. It can be about creating art. It can be about sharing beauty. It can inspire. If you are an iphone user and have not downloaded this free app, I encourage you to do so. It’s a game changer.

As a photographer it is rare to find yourself on the other side of the lens. When an opportunity is presented to photograph a photographer and be photographed by a photographer you take it. Phillip Glickman is a really great wedding photographer here in Austin, TX who has a clean, classic, and timeless style, which I am a huge fan of.

I was privileged to be able to photograph the people of Corgan at their Dallas branch over the past few weeks. It was quite an undertaking as I was responsible for shooting 250 of their employees over 3 phases of 2 days each. This broke down to one person every 10 minutes for 8 hours a day. Not only was our goal to capture a great head-shot for each individual, but we also sought to capture a lifestyle shot, conveying the personality of Corgan. This was an ambitious goal and I’m happy to say that it was a success. It drives me to challenge the status quo by pursuing a unique and creative style. It was exciting to work with those who agreed with this sentiment.

My aim in my profession is more than just technical. It is to capture moments that communicate genuine portrayals of people. It is story telling (the reason why I got into photography in the first place). I found that by engaging each person and showing true interest in what they had to say, it allowed enough of a comfort level to exist so that it was possible to photograph natural and positive expressions. In many cases I felt it necessary to engage in unusual topics of conversation or tell really bad jokes in order to distract people from feeling the pressure of being photographed. Some nuts were harder to crack than others, but overall I was extremely pleased with the results.

I have a new friend in ATX. He approached me yesterday looking for a job.. or a cup of coffee. I told him I could help him out with the second one. As we walked over to Progress I asked him a few questions about himself and he began to sharing his life story. I knew almost immediately that I wanted to photograph him. He humbly agreed to my unusual request. We walked back to the office and I quickly set up my equipment as he continued his story. I was intrigued the entire hour and a half that followed. I was his listening ear and he was my exquisite subject. He told of his epic journey through life. From his days as a full blood Native-American boy growing up in Wisconsin to the 54 months he spent in the war in Vietnam, it was as if there was no end to the tale. And that was fine with me. There was nothing else that could compare to the time I got to share with this Chippewa.
